Very Simply put, it is when a horse helps us to learn something.
More fully, Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an experiential form of learning that involves equines. It is one of the fastest growing disciplines in the equine industry. It's not just for the horse person. It involves anyone and everyone whoever may so be inclined to experience life in a different way.
The concept that horses might be helpful or healing to people struggling with issues is based on the idea that horses (as domesticated prey animals) are extremely sensitive to changes in the human being (as a predatory creature). The horses with their keen eye sight and sensitivity to human's emotions, act as a huge biofeedback machine, providing information regarding the client's moods and inclinations.
In an educational setting, horses and the lifestyle that goes along with maintaining horses, provides opportunities to teach critical life and communication skills. Horses mostly use non-vocal communication and body language. When they mirror our behavior, it provides valuable information to the teacher as to why a child might be fearful, anxious, or seems to not want to learn.
The young and old alike can gain self-esteem from working with such large and powerful creatures who can be obedient as a faithful lap dog. They offer us humility, compassion, and a challenge - all critical elements to supporting self-awareness and growth as well as assertiveness skills.
All of this may be hard to grasp. Feel free to do a little research. Such a growing discipline is in good company with organizations popping up all over the world.
